MP E Ahamed, veteran Parliamentarian passes away
MP E Ahamed passed away some time before the Budget presentation. The Congress demanded that the budget presentation be postponed by a day as a mark of respect to the departed soul. The party continued with this rant even after the Honourable Speaker of The Lok Sabha, Ms Pramila Mahajan had made her stance clear on the subject. The stance made pragmatically with the overall National Interest in mind.
The Speaker Clears the Presentation
The Speaker cleared the proceedings and explained the non-deferment on the following grounds:
- the Budget is a constitutional requirement
- Process already set in motion with the President’s Assent
- the Budget papers had already reached the Parliament House
- The Lok Sabha’s sitting on the day after the budget would be adjourned as a mark of respect to the departed soul.
The Congress’ Conspiracy Charges
Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress), the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha suspected a conspiracy. He alleged that the late MP had passed away much earlier than announced by the Government. He suspected the Government did not wish to announce the demise earlier because it would then be under more pressure to defer the presentation.
Cool Chilli’s Comments
As a nation we need to learn to move on. Come Hell or Highwater, we need to be up and running. Traditions and sentiments are no doubt important. But they should not come in the way of nation building.
Let us be Statesmanlike
Political Parties, whether in Government or Opposition need to be ‘Statesmanlike’ in their outllok. Trying to get cheap publicity or electoral brownie points, leveraging the death of a hardworking Parliamentarian little behoves strong parties. Mr Ahamed himself would have wished the show to go on.
The Parliament should set an example for the nation. Rather than adjourn for a day, it should restrict its tribute to departed souls (unless there be strong reasons otherwise) to a few minutes of silence.
Nation needs Strong Opposition, Fresh Blood. Any Blood Type, but non-dynastic
Very importantly, we need a strong opposition. The Government in Power needs to feel more accountable. The Congress is doing its legacy and the Nation much disservice by diluting its credibility. India cannot afford the Congress to die so easily. Blood Infusion is urgently needed, as ‘non-dynastic’ as possible!
