Err To Gain power? Coup attempt against Erdogan stops cold Turkey.
The coup attempted against President Erdogan has failed in a manner that betrays the depth in the planning/preparedness of the plotters. Or they may not have envisaged the ability of increasingly authoritarian President Erdogan to mobilize support against the coup.
Readers may be reminded of the fact that, far from being the devil as the impression may be, the Turkish Army has long stood for a secular and democratic regime. The Army had intervened earlier in similar coups to help get a democratic/secular regime in place. The provocation for the latest coup would have to be the pro-Islamic and more dictatorial working style of Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The abrupt manner in which the coup attempt fizzled would not only discourage further attempts, but also embolden Erdogan to take more steps to strengthen his hold and cut dissent.
