Jai Ma Durgae! Yusra Mardini helps save 16 fellow refugees from drowning.

In the ages gone by, the Goddess Durga saved the people in the region around Mysore by vanquishing the Buffalo Demon Mahishasur and thereby getting the name Mahishasura Mardhini.

We see many modern day heroines who help those around them under very trying circumstances. One of the heart warming feature of the Rio Olympics is that of a special Team representing refugees and their individual stories.

A remarkable story is that of Yusra Mardini 18 year old Syrian refugee who along with three others helped 16 other refugees. The motor of the boat carrying these refugees failed. The dinghy meant for six could not take the burden of twenty and was on verge of capsizing. Most of the refuges couldn’t swim. But this doughty girl braved the Deep Sea Demons along with three others and took the boat to safe land.

Whether Yusra lands a medal at the Olympics or not, this Olymian’s Golden Spirit would bring smiles even to those on Mount Olympus!
