The Mumbai High Court has brushed aside the decision of the Trust managing the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai. There will be no bar on women entering the mausoleum and paying their respects at the shrine of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari.
Readers may recollect that the Trimbakeshwar and Shani Shingnapur temples were also thrown open to women a little earlier this year. It is heartening to see the Judiciary strike a blow for women’s equality. Some pockets of conservative thinking may look askance at this development and may feel justified too.
